MAN TAKES BREAK FROM ULTRAS, SPENDS TIME WITH FAMILY

Mar 29, 2024

In a heartwarming turn of events, local ultrarunner Mark Stevens has made the decision to temporarily step back from the rigorous demands of ultramarathon training to focus on spending quality time with his family. The announcement has been met with a mix of admiration and disbelief from the ultra-running community, which has long known Stevens as a relentless competitor and training enthusiast.

Stevens, who has completed over a dozen ultramarathons in the past few years, cited a desire to reconnect with his loved ones as the primary motivation behind his decision. “I realized that while I’ve been out there chasing distances and personal records, I’ve been missing out on important moments at home,” he explained, reflecting on recent family gatherings he had skipped in favor of training runs. “It’s time for me to prioritize the people who matter most.”

Rediscovering Family Time

Friends and family members report that Stevens has already begun to embrace his new role as a dedicated family man. “I’ve seen him take the kids to the park more in the past week than I have in the last year,” remarked his wife, Sarah Stevens. “It’s been refreshing to see him so engaged. He even attempted to bake cookies with them yesterday, which was a whole adventure on its own!”

Stevens has also been spotted participating in family activities he had previously neglected. “He joined us for a board game night, and let me tell you, he was far more competitive than I expected,” said his teenage son, Ryan. “He treated it like an ultra race. We had to remind him that ‘let’s just have fun’ is part of the rules.”

Community Reactions

While Stevens’s decision has been met with support from many within the ultra-running community, others express skepticism about his hiatus. “This is an unusual move for someone like Mark, who thrives on the challenge of ultra distances,” commented fellow ultrarunner and friend, Jessica “Always Racing” Lee. “But if anyone can find balance between family life and running, it’s him.”

Some are even speculating whether Stevens will return to the sport with a renewed sense of purpose. “I think this break might give him a fresh perspective,” said his coach, Tom “The Ultra Guru” Johnson. “Sometimes you need to step away to appreciate what you’re missing. Who knows? He might come back stronger than ever—or he might realize he loves board games more than running 100 miles!”

Looking Forward

As Stevens embraces his new lifestyle, he has hinted at potential future plans. “I’m not done with ultra-running by any means, but I want to make sure my family knows they’re my priority,” he stated. “I’m looking forward to more family hikes and bike rides instead of long solo runs. I think this could be a great opportunity for all of us to get fit together.”

At press time, Stevens was spotted at a local park, pushing his children on swings and occasionally glancing at his watch, not to track his pace but rather to cherish each moment spent with his family. “Running will always be a part of me, but right now, my heart is with them,” he concluded, as he embraced his daughter and watched his son scramble up the jungle gym.
